Wedding Band FAQs
How long does a wedding band play for?
The usual set times for an evening band are 2 x 60 or 3 x 40 minute sets ending no later than midnight. Between sets, you can have music playing through the PA system, either from your own playlist or one the band provides.
For an additional cost, most professional live wedding bands also provide a manned DJ service in addition to the live band, which allows guests to make requests on the night and allows the person in control to change up the music played depending on the party’s vibe.
If you’re a real party animal and want to keep the wedding party going past midnight, then most bands are happy to stay behind with their sound and lighting equipment for an additional fee.
How far in advance should I book a wedding band?
The best wedding bands get booked up well in advance, so it’s best to secure your booking at least 9-12 months before your wedding date.
Peak dates such as summer Saturdays, bank holidays, and major calendar events like New Year’s Eve are particularly popular, so if you’re looking to hire a wedding band for one of these dates, it’s best to be as organised as possible.
Booking in advance also means you can relax before your wedding, knowing that your wedding entertainment is taken care of.
Will the band learn a first dance song?
When booking a wedding band, you’ll find that most are happy to learn a song request for you, typically for the first dance. It’s always a good idea to give the band plenty of notice to ensure they’re happy to play it and to allocate time to rehearse the song for your big day.
If you’d also like the band to learn additional songs not shown in their repertoire, then you may find this is possible; however, this usually incurs additional charges for the additional rehearsal time.
How much does it cost to hire a wedding band?
When searching for a function band, you’ll notice that prices can vary significantly due to several factors:
1. Line-up
The number of musicians in the band is the main factor when looking at band prices. The more members in the band, the more people there are to pay. Large, established wedding bands may also bring a sound engineer, increasing costs further. Below is an overview of the popular line-ups we offer, along with guide prices.
- 3-piece band (£1000-1250): Typically includes vocals, guitar, bass and drums. Ideal for smaller venues or intimate settings, offering a compact yet energetic performance.
- 4-piece band (£1250-1500): Usually includes an additional instrument like keys or an extra guitar, allowing for a more diverse repertoire.
- 5-piece band (£1500-1800): Often includes another vocalist or a lead instrument such as saxophone, enhancing the performance dynamics.
- 6-piece band and above (£2000+): Expands further with additional musicians or singers (male and female vocals), offering a fuller sound and a more visually impressive show, perfect for larger venues and weddings.
2. Seasonal and Weekly Pricing Variations
The cost of hiring a wedding band can significantly vary depending on the season and day of the week. During peak wedding season, typically during the summer months, prices may be higher due to increased demand.
Booking a band during off-peak times, like winter or early spring, can be more budget-friendly. The day of the week can also affect the price. Weekends, especially Saturdays, are often more expensive than weekdays due to their popularity for weddings.
3. Quality & Experience
Established bands with a proven track record typically command higher fees. These bands often bring a level of renown and expertise and are often highly in demand. In contrast, local or less experienced bands may offer more budget-friendly options, but with varying degrees of professionalism and quality.
By booking through a reputable agency like DG Music, we ensure you get the best wedding band for your budget.
4. Location
Prices also depend on the location of your venue relative to the band’s location, so always a good idea to start your search with local wedding bands. For example, booking a London band for a performance in Wales will incur higher costs due to additional travel expenses and potential accommodation needs.
Do bands have any particular requirements?
Every professional wedding band has a list of basic requirements, such as:
- Parking: To ensure the band can easily load and unload their equipment.
- Food/Drink: A basic hot suppliers meal and soft/drinks water.
- Changing Room: A place to store belongings and to get changed (not essential).
- Electricity supply: Minimum 2 x 13 amp wall sockets so the band can plug in their equipment safely.
- Space: Adequate space for the band to set up and perform (see specification on the band’s profile page).
My venue has sound restrictions. Will this be a problem?
When choosing your wedding venue, it’s important to be aware of any sound policies they might have in place for live bands. Venues often implement a decibel limit to control the volume of music, typically noted as a threshold like ’95db’. This is to ensure that the music doesn’t disturb the venue’s surroundings, such as nearby residents.
Before hiring a band, it’s prudent to check with your venue regarding any such sound restrictions. Speak to our team to confirm that your chosen band is comfortable performing within these limits. In some cases, adhering to these policies might require the band to adjust their usual setup. This could involve using an electric drum kit or integrating with the venue’s in-house sound system to comply with the specified sound levels.
Do UK wedding bands provide daytime wedding music?
You’ll find that most live wedding bands offer some form of wedding entertainment for the ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast. This could be a stripped-down version of the band performing background music during the afternoon wedding reception or perhaps just the band’s singer with a guitarist to serenade guests during the ceremony.
What music will my wedding band play?
If you’ve booked a band based around a theme, such as a soul band or a rock & roll band, they’ll naturally focus on those music genres. However, if you’ve booked an all-round party band — often referred to as a function band — they’ll typically offer a wider range of music styles and be more open to your direction.
All bands have repertoire lists available to view on their profile page, and you’re welcome to select your preferences before your wedding day.
